The Faculty of Management of University of Warsaw  is the oldest university faculty of management in Poland. It goes back to 1972, when the Institute of Management Studies was set up at University of Warsaw. Two years later, in 1974, it became the Institute of Organisation and Management of University of Warsaw together with the Polish Academy of Sciences. 1977 was a turning point in the history of the university, and at this stage, the Institute became a Faculty, thus taking its present name. It remains a faculty since further re-organization, the latest in 1996.
From its inception, the Faculty of Management has aimed to produce expert managers for Polish business and local and central government. These aims were reflected in the setting up in 1990 of the International Centre for Management Studies, designed to educate managers and businessmen trained to compete in a market economy. This International Centre for Management Studies runs the Executive Master of Business Studies programme (Executive M.B.A), a prestigious degree course, considered to be one of the best in Poland. It is run jointly with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U.S.A.), which ensures that students are in contact with the cutting edge of the discipline at an international level. Graduates receive degrees conferred by both the University of Warsaw and the University of Illinois.

As part of its educational mission, the Faculty of Management has from the beginning tried to remain closely in touch with its environment and its clients. This has been reflected in a flexible programme of studies. As well as a standard five-year full-time M.A. programmes, in 1975-1998 the faculty offered five-year extra-mural M.A. programmes. An important point in the history of the faculty was reached when three-year evening and extra-mural degree courses in management studies were set up (B.A. degree). At the same time, graduates of these courses were offered the opportunity to continue their education to the M.A. level by taking a further two-year degree course leading to master's degrees in Management Studies or in Accounting and Finance.
During its history, the School of Management has run a variety of post-graduate diploma courses, reflecting again its responsiveness to the social environment. New educational proposals and staff training were introduced to meet new challenges, particularly after 1989. One-year post-graduate diploma courses were often organised to meet the needs of particular professional groups, or those of the management personnel of particular institutions. There were also, for example, three-year B.A. degree courses organised for chartered accountants (59 graduates), or in financial management, to prepare staff for the revenue office and other financial institutions. For many years, the faculty ran one-year post-graduate diploma courses for the management staff of ZUS (State Social Insurance Bureau), for the Agricultural Social Insurance Office, for the Customs and Excise Department and for the Ministry of Finance. In 1986 a post-graduate diploma course for local government officers in the Plock voivodeship was set up, and this later became the post-graduate diploma in management which still functions. In 1996, a five-year extra-mural master's degree programme in management studies was started at the University of Warsaw branch in Plock, following the programme of studies of the master's degree in the Faculty of Management. A further turning point came in the year 2000 when the School of Management opened a degree programme taught exclusively in English: the International Business Program. This is a two-year programme intended for students who in the first three years of their degree programme cover basic courses in management of business organisations, achieve very good marks and have a very good knowledge of English. By taking part in this programme, they have an opportunity to attend lectures by the very best academic staff of the Faculty of Management and also by invited guest lecturers from associated Polish universities and universities abroad, mainly from Europe and the U.S.A.

In the academic year 1999/2000, there were 3,999 students enrolled in the programmes outlined above, and there will be an increase in student numbers in 2000/2001. From 1972 to 1999, 4,434 graduates obtained master's degrees from the faculty, 120 doctorates were conferred (190 doctoral students were registered with the faculty council as being at an advanced stage of progress with their theses), and 23 higher doctorates were awarded. Bachelor degrees were conferred for the first time in 1995 (180 graduates) and between 1995 and 1999 there were 1,186 graduates with a B.A. in Management Studies; more than 80% of these went on to enrol for a master's degree programme at the Faculty of Management. Nowadays the Faculty of Management has over 6000 students, of which over 3000 are postgraduates.

A high standard of education is ensured by the academic staff of the Faculty of Management. The research they carry out is to the highest standards of contemporary work in the fields of economics, law, management theory, quantitative methods, marketing, finance, sociology, psychology etc. Over many years of working together, the academic staff has acquired unique insights into integrating this multi-disciplinary expertise surrounding questions of contemporary management studies. This integration applies both to research and teaching in the faculty. The staff members of the faculty are in long-term contact with real management processes, and act in an advisory capacity in firms and local government institutions.
